IDM-006 Shipwreck

Filipe Castro

Country: Mozambique
Place: Ilha de Moçambique
Coordinates: Lat. ; Long.
Type: Unknown
Identified: No
Dated: circa 1600

Introduction

This wreck was found on the 6th of July 2001 following information from local fishermen who allegedly had recovered lead sheathing and iron fittings from the area. In the course of its reconnaissance and assessment this site was deemed uninteresting due to its shallow location, with easy access to fishermen and divers, and therefore unlikely to have “important archaeological and/or cultural material.”

Location of the IDM-006 shipwreck site.

The site was located at a depth of 1.8 m in low tide, inside the reef of Cabeceira Pequena. A stone ballast pile was visible in a flat rocky seabed with little possibilities of hiding bigger parts of the ship.

Five iron cannons were found 328 m to the NE of the ballast, and were considered associated to this shipwreck.
